The MAP section of the 8-part AIP forms
a large part of the new AD section located in each airport subsection
under AD 2.24. This means that the charts require new page numbering and
re-location into the AD section. The process used to transfer the charts
is subject to the quality and format of original chart data and careful
consideration must be made before starting the process.
Page replacement
If the production process is such that
the charts are produced and printed independently of the AIP then the
new AIP will hold place markers for each chart. The place markers provide
instruction to replace the AIP page with the corresponding chart. This
is a low cost option and will enable a gradual replacement of all charts
with electronic source files in the future.
Scanning
When high quality film transparency
charts are available, it is worth considering scanning the charts to enable
direct placement into the APS application files. This will produce raster
files in TIFF format and it should be noted that the scans will usually
result in large file sizes. From experience it has also been found that
colour charts do not produce the best results and conversion to black
and white grey scale is a recommendation.
Vector originals
The best results are achieved if a
CAD system is already being used to produce some or all of the Charts.
An option is then to import these charts as PDF files into the AIP document.
Once again the initial import of charts in to the AIP
for phase 1 would only require the charts in their current issued form.
During phase 3, the charts would be re-evaluated for accuracy and where
re-drawing is required, they can be automatically updated in the 3 part
AIP document.
