Information cross mapping (ICM)
The term 'cross mapping' describes
the process of moving data from existing 8-part AIP locations to fit the
new 3-part structure and organisation as set out in ICAO Annex 15.
Specialist Knowledge
The requirement is that the text and
data is cross mapped to the correct location for delivery of the first
new AIP proof. To ensure that all data is moved to the correct location,
a sound knowledge of aviation and of the content and structure of the
old and new AIP formats is required. This specialist general aviation
knowledge, combined with previous experience in AIP production is essential
to successful ICM.
Sections of note that require such knowledge include
the organisation of text and data present in AGA and RAC sections into
the 3-part AD 2 sections and the movement of data from the 8-part COM
section into 3-part ENR 4.1 and AD 2.18, 2.19 sections.
Tracking
All data extracted and moved to the
new format AIP requires careful tracking. When moved, it is necessary
to mark all data in the 8-part hard copy as extracted. Unresolved or changed
data is marked differently. The system of tracking in hard-copy ensures
that the changing status of AIP content during the conversion process
is accurately recorded. The process requires a level of detail and accuracy
often down to that of a single word or number to ensure that all moved
data is accounted for.
It is the nature of conversion from 8 to 3-part, that
requires such accurate tracking and in many examples, data from one 8-part
section is required to complete more than one 3-part section, or from
many 8-part sections to one 3-part.
The mapping process continuously changes as data queries
are resolved and text moved or re-edited and as such, the status of AIP
content requires accurate tracking to avoid error.
